If You Are Stuck in a Sinking Car, You Must Do THIS to Survive!

An average of 400 people a year die while trapped in a sinking car every year. This might not seem like a large number, but these deaths are easily preventable. Unfortunately, certain shows and movies have taught people to wait till the car fills with water before trying to leave their motor vehicle, but this is not a good idea. Chances are if you do not get out of your car in 30 seconds, you will not be able to get out at all. Two other common mistakes people make are to panic or call the police. In this situation, it is best to call the police after you have left your vehicle, because a call to the police takes too much time.

This is what you should do!

  1. Unbuckle your safety belt.
  2. Break open a window. Use a sharp object or your elbow.
  3. Grab your children and get out of the car. If there are multiple children in the car, release the oldest first and then the youngest. Push them out of the window one at a time.
  4. Swim to safety.
It’s easy to believe that you will never be stuck in a sinking car. It isn’t a common experience. However, just as with fire, it is important to be prepared if the unthinkable happens. This is especially true for the state of Florida. Although data is vague, some organizations estimate that one person a week dies in a sinking car.
