You've probably heard the saying "I woke up on the wrong side of the bed." While silly, there's actually some truth behind it. The way you start your morning usually sets the tone for the rest of the day. If you wake up late, stub your toe while jumping out of bed and wind up with a cold water shower, you might end up being grumpy and unproductive. On the other hand, if you start your day with a productive and peaceful morning, you might just have a wonderful day. There are several common mistakes people make in the morning that can end up leading to a crappy day.
Here are five things you should never do when you first wake up:
1. Don't Hit Snooze
Most sleep specialists agree that
the snooze button won't do you any favors. Every time you hit snooze and fall back asleep, you enter a sleep cycle that will get interrupted in a few minutes. Since you won't be able to finish your sleep cycle, you'll feel even more tired and lazy when you finally get up. The first time your alarm goes off, stretch your arms and legs while in bed. The more you stretch, the more ready for the day you'll feel. After stretching, jump up and get going!
2. Don't Check Your E-mails
It's tempting to check work e-mails and social media as soon as you wake up, but it won't lead to a happy and productive day. Checking your phone as soon as you wake up can distract you from getting out of bed and getting ready for the day. Instead of scrolling through your inbox and notifications, focus on a peaceful morning. Save checking your e-mails for when you get to work.
3. Don't Drink Coffee Right Away
Studies have shown that between 8:00 and 9:00 in the morning, our bodies produce large amounts of cortisol. Cortisol regulates energy in the body.
Drinking coffee before 9:30am may cause your body to reduce cortisol production. This will actually leave you with less energy. If you need a cup of joe to get going, grab a cup on your way into the office, but try not to drink it first thing in the morning.
4. Don't Leave Your Room Messy
It's easy to leave a mess in the house, especially if you're in a hurry. But
making your bed in the morning is associated with increased productivity for the day. Wake up five minutes early if necessary, to make sure your bedroom and the rest of the house is in order before you leave. You'll thank yourself later when you walk into a clean, organized house after work.
5. Don't Wake Up In The Dark
The body's internal clock knows the difference between light and darkness. Waking up in a room that's pitch black can confuse your brain and make you tired. When your alarm foes off, open the curtains or flip on a light switch. Don't try to get ready in the dark. It will make it much harder for your body and your brain to wake up!
