There are ten major sub-species of Theobroma Cacao currently in wide cultivation around the world. Of these, the most famous cacao genetic clusters include:
Criollo (This refers to ONLY Central American cacaos of which we grow many at our farm in Hawaii. Those claiming their product is from Ecuador, but a criollo variety, do not understand cacao genetics and are misinformed; their product should not be trusted).
Upper Amazonian Forastero (A solid mix of genetics producing the best tasting cacao in the world. Arriba Nacional is the original cacao of Ecuador which has mixed with Upper Amazonian genetics. This is the genetic source of our Cacao products.)
Trinitario (A mix of numerous cacao genetic groups that were made popular on the island of Trinidad.)
Of these, Upper Amazonian Foresteros with Arriba Nacional genetics are the most highly prized for their flavour and mineral content and the tree’s overall beauty.
