DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe With Essential Oils

On busy days, dry shampoo is a life saver. However, many people might be looking for a DIY dry shampoo because they are worried about the ingredients often found in commercial dry shampoo. This is especially true if someone is looking for a product without artificial fragrance.

Why Use Dry Shampoo? Who Is It For?

Dry shampoo is a product people put in their hair when they do not have time for a full wash. It is a great alternative for busy moms or professionals who don't always have time for a shower in the morning. Dry shampoo soaks up the extra oil on your scalp, so your hair looks clean even if you didn't wash it. Most Americans wash their hair too much. Over washing can cause hair damage, scalp irritation, and even hair loss. However, a healthy DIY dry shampoo is perfect for people on the go. It is also a great way to keep your hair looking fresh without washing everyday. Dry shampoo is for everyone. Kids, men, and women can all benefit from a natural DIY dry shampoo. It is especially good for people who like to get in a quick workout but don't have time to shower right away afterwards. Basically, dry shampoo is for everyone, and this homemade dry shampoo is the best because it has essential oils!

DIY Dry Shampoo With Lavender & Peppermint Essential Oils

The base of this DIY dry shampoo depends on hair color. For lighter hair, use cornstarch or arrowroot powder. Use cinnamon powder (ground cinnamon) or cacao powder for darker hair. Arrowroot powder is the best option for lighter hair, but cornstarch is easier to find. As for people with darker hair, make your choice based on scent. Cinnamon and chocolate are both great smells to choose from. For this DIY dry shampoo recipe, we suggest using both lavender essential oil and peppermint oil. These two oils will not only keep your hair smelling fantastic, they will also help keep your scalp clean. Lavender will destroy bacteria and fight minor infections. Peppermint will keep dandruff and lice away. Lavender and peppermint are a powerful combination.

DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe

This recipe is a guideline for you to make your own dry shampoo. You can mix up the essential oils and try different ones to see what works best. However, it is important to remember to do a skin test before using a new oil. Also, stay away from citrus oils. They can be photosensitive, and no one wants a sunburn on their head. What You Need:
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder or cornstarch for light hair
  • OR... 2 tablespoons cacao or cinnamon powder for dark hair
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop peppermint essential oil
Directions:
  1. Mix all ingredients in a small closed container.
  2. Sprinkle conservatively onto the scalp and roots. A make up brush can be used to work it in.
  3. Comb it in or blow dry hair a minute or two after application.

Precautions

As with all essential oil use, try a small amount of the essential oil first before putting more in contact with your skin. Your scalp can be sensitive, and you don't want a reaction. Also, peppermint essential oil isn't considered safe for use on children under the age of 6.
